Sherry Cabano, principal at William Allen Middle School and the district's HIP coordinator, presented the district's Student Safety Data System (SSDS) report to the board, covering the reporting period Jan.1 through June 30, 2024. The report summarizes required state submissions on bullying (HIB) trainings and programs, alleged and confirmed HIB incidents, violence, vandalism, weapon and substance offenses, and incidents leading to student removal from class.
Cabano described preventive and instructional programs at each grade band, including character-education work at WAMS and student-generated clubs at the high school, and said the district submits a HIB self-assessment to the state each October. "The state provides a rubric that we go through," she said, describing documentation and checklists used to substantiate self-scores; building-level evidence supports the district's category scores.
Board members asked questions about the rubric and whether the district tracks year-over-year trends. Cabano said the rubrics include documentation guidance and that the self-assessment provides an opportunity to identify areas for improvement; she said changes made in programming will be reflected in the spring report.
The board accepted the SSDS/HIB report and the administration will submit the HIB self-assessment on Oct.31 as required by state rules.
