Council approves plat corrections and Main Street MOU; police report shows May crime declines

At its June 9, 2025 work session the Kennesaw City Council approved several consent items and received a police briefing.

Plat correction: Staff presented an amended final plat for the JW Collection (John Whelan) townhome project on 3.7 acres to record as-built placements for the first three of six buildings. The applicant said the filing reflects construction already completed and staff recommended approval to match the as-built locations; the council approved the consent item.

Main Street MOU: The council approved a 2025–26 Main Street affiliate memorandum of understanding with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. Speaker 9 said the city is no longer a startup but an affiliate, which makes it eligible to apply for some grants and to receive preferred interest rates on certain state revolving loan funds if those funds are allocated by the state. "We are eligible to apply for some grants if they come along," Speaker 9 said. Staff noted current grant opportunities are limited.

Police briefing: The police chief (Speaker 5) reported May 2025 Group A offenses totaled 105 compared with 130 in May 2024 and highlighted reductions including a 16-case drop in simple assaults and nine fewer drug/narcotics offenses year over year. The chief also gave operational counts (calls dispatched, incidents, citations and accidents) for council situational awareness.

Public inquiry: Staff also relayed a county inquiry about possible truck restrictions on McCollum Parkway; council discussion raised enforcement and signage concerns and staff said he would respond to the county.

Next steps: Staff will finalize plat recording and Main Street paperwork, confirm any grant opportunities, and respond to the county regarding the truck restriction inquiry.
