External auditors told the Wantagh Union Free School District Board of Education that three independent reviews the financial statement audit, the extracurricular activities audit and the federal single-audit of grants received unmodified opinions, the strongest audit conclusion.
Mary Anne Van Dine, managing partner at the audit firm, said the team also offered two non-material recommendations: one related to extra-classroom activity procedures and one related to year-end accounting processes. "All 3 reports received what we call an unmodified opinion," Van Dine said, and she added that district staff had already begun implementing the recommendations.
Van Dine and Superintendent John McNamara credited several financial factors for the positive results: higher interest rates that bolstered revenue, increased state aid for this year and a maturing bond that reduced debt service by about $1,200,000. The district reported an unassigned fund balance of roughly 4% and said it is setting aside reserves for long-term needs.
McNamara also updated the board on a separate audit by the New York State Comptrollers office of the districts financial management system, which began in September 2022. That review identified user-rights and control items; the district posted the report to its website, submitted a corrective action plan to the Comptrollers office and implemented changes. McNamara said the Comptrollers review did not uncover any questionable transactions.
The board accepted the audits and thanked the audit committee and staff for their cooperation. Members asked no substantive follow-up questions during the presentation; the auditor commended the districts financial controls while recommending continuous improvement in procedures.
