Elwood board advances first read of grading, honor-roll and valedictorian policies; plan to shift to numeric grades and seven marking periods

The Elwood Union Free School District's policy committee presented a first read of three student-evaluation policies and outlined several substantive changes intended to align written policy with current practice.
Policy committee members, including Eileen Kelly Gorman, explained that the district already uses numeric grades and the proposed revisions would formalize that across all classes, including electives and physical education. "We currently only use numeric grades," a committee member stated during the discussion.
The committee also discussed shifting from six to seven marking periods and adjusting the calendar point used to calculate valedictorian/salutatorian standings so the change would apply beginning with the class of 2026 rather than retroactively affecting the class of 2025.
Board members said the revisions were intended to bring district policy in line with neighboring districts and the guidance department's practice. The board approved the first read and scheduled a second read for the Aug. 29 meeting; if adopted after the second read, the changes are planned to take effect for the coming school year.
