New superintendent outlines summer programs; district-wide safety plan draft to be posted for public comment

Dr. Steele, newly installed as superintendent of the Elwood Union Free School District, used his first superintendent's report to thank the community and summarize district summer programs and safety-plan next steps.
"It's only been a few days, but between the emails, the phone calls, the nice notes that I have received, there's no doubt that I am excited to be here," Steele said, thanking staff and families for the welcome.
Steele described two summer offerings: a "summer boost" program for kindergarten through eighth grade running July 1 through July 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Harley, and the Extended School Year (ESY) program for kindergarten through 12th grade running July 1 through Aug. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The board was also told the BOCES regional summer program will run July 15 through Aug. 15 and that schedules would be emailed to families.
On school safety, district safety official Mrs. Dunkel said the district-wide safety-plan draft "will be on the district website" beginning the next day and invited comments via safetyplan@elwood.k12.ny.us. She added that public comment will remain open until the public hearing at the board of education meeting on Aug. 29.
These items were presented as informational updates; the board did not take formal action on the safety plan at this meeting but set the timeline for community review and the August public hearing as the next step.
