Superintendent Dr. Steele used his report to update the board on operational preparations and student supports ahead of the new school year. He thanked Ron Caratou, the district director of facilities, and his team for work to ready school buildings and grounds, and said the district will receive its full staff on superintendent conference day, Tuesday, Sept. 3, with students returning the following day.
Dr. Steele described a pilot series of college-application workshops led by the John Glenn guidance team that helped seniors with the Common App and individual college essays. The workshops culminated on Aug. 27 with visits from admissions representatives from Penn State, Utica University, Iona University, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Geneseo, Pace University and Molloy University. Dr. Steele said the pilot drew "over 50" students and that the district is "definitely looking into ways" to make the workshops an annual offering.
Board members asked whether similar offerings could be developed specifically for students with special education needs; staff identified transition services and programs such as AccessVR and OPWDD as resources to support postsecondary planning. Dr. Steele also reported that John Glenn was recognized as a "school of distinction" for the 2023-24 school year because its varsity teams qualified for the scholar-athlete team award, and said 293 students registered for JV or varsity fall athletics.
The superintendent closed by thanking staff and wishing the community a safe Labor Day weekend ahead of the start of the school year.
