Elwood board recognizes John Glenn students for leadership, fundraising and inclusion efforts

The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education on Sept. 11 recognized a group of John Glenn High School students for summer volunteerism and leadership in inclusive programs such as Best Buddies and Unified Basketball.
"If you don't know me, my name is Corey McNamara. I'm the proud principal at John Glenn High School," McNamara said as he introduced the honorees and described the students' roles in peer mentoring and inclusion. He noted that the town of Huntington and State Assemblyman Stern's office provided citations for the students.
McNamara listed several students and staff who supported the programs, saying the school's Best Buddies club had been transformed with alumni support and that unified athletics had expanded. He singled out one student’s fundraising: "Joey... has worked to fundraise, now up to $7,500," McNamara said, noting those funds will help program expansion.
The board thanked the students and staff for their work, and members said they looked forward to continuing to support inclusive programming districtwide.
The recognitions were presented at the start of the meeting; the board offered congratulations and encouragement to the honorees before moving on to other business.
