Fifth Avenue students highlight community service projects at board meeting

At the Oct. 10 board meeting, students from Fifth Avenue School presented short remarks about school‑led service projects that staff and trustees said showcase empathy and community engagement.
Sofia Cimino told the board KC Kids matters because students "help people" and because the group makes students feel "joyful, considerate, happy, and empathetic." Clara Vineyard said participating made her feel "good inside" and described how the group supports classmates and community members.
Other students recounted specific projects: Kale Sawman described planting flowers for Mother's Day and delivering them to a nursing home; Peyton Smith described making Father's Day kites for veterans at a nursing home; Liam Mazur described writing cards for veterans at the VA; and Mackenzie Gibb described organizing a toy drive for Stony Brook Children's Hospital after being treated there for type 1 diabetes.
Board members and administration praised the students' presentations, with trustees calling the session "the best board meeting I have had in 5 years" and thanking students and staff for demonstrating the district's profile of a graduate (empathy, communication and civic contribution). The board said the presentation format — brief, student‑led 'ignite' style slots — will continue as part of school showcases.
