County approves application to DOJ COPS school violence prevention grant with school district match

Franklin County fiscal court on June 4 voted to authorize the county to apply for the Department of Justice COPS School Violence Prevention Program grant and to partner with Franklin County Schools on the application and administration if awarded.
Captain Kevin Abrams, Franklin County Schools’ safety coordinator, and Stella Pollard, the district’s director of technology, outlined how upgraded camera and door access systems would integrate with local dispatch and police access. "This is a 3 year grant with a maximum award of $500,000," a school representative stated. The grant requires a 25% local match; the school district has agreed to provide that match if the award is made.
Officials said the district already uses integrated camera and access systems at some schools and that the grant would allow standardization and expansion, replacing piecemeal systems and enabling centralized remote monitoring. The court approved a resolution authorizing the county judge/executive to apply for the grant and to manage administration if successful.
Courtors noted the award rate for the program is competitive (staff estimated roughly 200 awards nationwide), and they emphasized that authorization to apply does not commit county funds unless the grant is awarded and the required match obligation is triggered.
The motion passed by voice vote.
