Police chief reports ARPA-funded radios and outlines vehicle, ammo and pump needs

Police and public-works officials updated the Hickman County commission on equipment and infrastructure needs, including new radios purchased with ARPA funds, high-mileage municipal vehicles, ammunition purchases for annual qualifications and failing sewer pumps.

Chief Ron Amber told the commission the department received new handheld radios purchased using state ARPA funds and that the radios replaced units that were 12–13 years old. He said the department purchased radios at roughly $6,000 apiece and that equipping a patrol vehicle typically costs about $10,000 on average; a recent outfitting amounted to $12,890.

Amber said two Tahoe vehicles were being used to replace older cars, and described recurring mechanical failures across older Chargers (shafts, radiators, pumps). He also said level-3 body armor was donated to the department and that annual qualifications will require ammunition purchases; vendors and approximate per-1,000-round prices were discussed.

Public-works staff reported four failed pumps (two reinstalled and one ordered) and that both pumps at a coast-guard lift station had shorted out. Staff explained engineers had concerns about the suitability of some pumps and said cleaning and repair work could require a multi-week drain-and-repair process.

Commissioners gave no formal directive beyond hearing the reports and instructing staff to continue repairs and return with necessary purchase and contract documents where applicable.

Follow-up items include finalizing ammunition procurement, confirming inventory/sign-out forms for issued gear, and completing pending pump replacements.
