Magoffin County OKs resolutions to seek Homeland Security grant for sheriff equipment and to allow Mountain Parkway access

Magoffin County commissioners approved a resolution authorizing the judge executive to execute required paperwork to apply to the Kentucky Homeland Security Office for a grant to equip the sheriff's office with pistols, rifles and tasers. The resolution was introduced by Speaker 1 and passed after routine motions and a voice vote.

The county also adopted a separate agreement with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet that permits contractors on the Mountain Parkway widening project to use and repair specified county roads. Speaker 1 said the Cabinet will repair roads damaged during construction, naming Shore Fork/Dry Bread, Oseil Road and Allen Spalding Cemetery Road as routes to be used. The project design, Speaker 1 added, includes two bridges and a roundabout near Prestonsburg Elementary as part of the corridor redesign.

County officials emphasized that state crews will restore roadways to their prior condition after impacts from the widening work. No individual vote tallies were recorded in the meeting transcript; the chair announced motions carried on both items. The Homeland Security grant application was described as seeking equipment for the sheriff's office; the transcript lists pistols, rifles and tasers as examples of the intended purchases.
