Franklin Middle students and staff introduce 'Franklin Freeze' monthly SEL lessons

Principal Marco Galante and his team introduced Franklin Middle School’s 'Franklin Freeze' social-emotional learning initiative. School counselors and teachers described a once-a-month pause when the entire building conducts SEL lessons in small groups with common language and shared focus. Student presenters said lessons cover growth versus fixed mindset, respect for self and others, SMART goals and responsible decision-making, and that student work will be displayed in the hallways to reinforce learning.
Seventh-grade student Riley Collins explained that each freeze lesson takes place in small groups of about 10 students so teachers and students can have deeper conversations. "Once a month, the whole building stops or freezes for a social emotional lesson," Collins said, describing the program’s objectives to build connections and coping skills. Students also said the school will start an after-school club to help create hallway displays and increase engagement.
Principal Galante said the initiative builds on work the school has done with the district’s Canton/Kenton forward plan and local interventions; trustees praised the program and encouraged replication across other schools.
