The superintendent briefed the board on a state-level regionalization initiative that invited districts to submit data and participate in regional planning conversations about shared services, transportation, facilities and program collaboration.
The superintendent said the report submission was optional and that a subsequent memo from the commissioner made clear districts are not required to regionalize. "Just because you submit the report doesn't mean that you have to regionalize anything," the superintendent told the board, and recommended the district signal interest in being "at the table" to explore options without committing to program consolidation.
She identified transportation as an early candidate for study — including possible shared routing to address student homelessness and cost pressures — and said she had raised concerns about protecting in-district program capacity (International Baccalaureate, arts, Project Lead The Way) so that shared services would not reduce opportunities for Binghamton students.
Board members expressed broad support for participating in conversations to explore efficiencies and guard local priorities. The superintendent said a transportation study and additional outreach are already underway and that she would bring updates to the board as work proceeds.
