Brentwood board clarifies dress-code language: masks optional unless ordered by administrator

At its Oct. 17 meeting, Brentwood Board of Education staff clarified a technical change to the district's student dress-code policy to address parent confusion about face masks. Stacy O'Connor, the presenter for the dress-code hearing, said the updated language is intended to make clear that "It is not required" for students to wear face masks and that masks "would only be required when directed by an administrator in the building as per the Department of Health."
Board members did not raise questions during the presentation and the clarification was reported to the board as an informational amendment to Policy 5,300.25. The board did not take separate action on the wording during the meeting beyond the presentation.
The district said the change responds to parents who, at the start of the school year, believed the prior text required continuous mask use. The presentation emphasized the policy does not currently mandate mask-wearing unless a building administrator, consistent with Department of Health direction, imposes a requirement for a specific circumstance.
