Wells Select Board marks promotion, hears Wreaths Across America presentation and forms veterans committee

The Wells Select Board opened its Oct. 1 meeting with a recognition and badge-pinning for Sergeant Adam Shaw, who was celebrated by colleagues for years of service, leadership training and community involvement. Family members Jackie, Lucas and Natalie joined Shaw at the podium as board members and staff offered praise.
After the promotion ceremony, presenters described their participation in Wreaths Across America convoys and ceremonies in locations that included Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon and state memorials. The presenters said the group’s goal is to ensure veterans’ graves in Wells are included in the nationwide wreath-laying program. A presenter told the board that cemetery staff estimate “approximately nearly 600 wreaths” would eventually be needed for Ocean View Cemetery. The board agreed to support the effort; members said they would contribute their annual stipends toward the wreath-drive.
The presentation recounted meetings with Gold Star families, described the emotional impact of laying wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and outlined the logistics of convoy stops and volunteer coordination. Presenters said a local Veterans Affairs committee has been formed to help with fundraising and logistics; the first meeting is scheduled for the next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the same meeting room and is open to the public.
Select Board members thanked the presenters and encouraged residents to support local fundraising and volunteer efforts for the December wreath-laying activities. The board also confirmed that individual beneficiaries can be honored: presenters said donors may request a wreath placed specifically for a named veteran at the local cemetery.
