Residents tell Sachem board Mapleton entrance is a safety hazard; board to inspect site

At the Sept. 10 board meeting, Margaret Ann Bianculli urged the Sachem Central School District to close an informal driveway opening on Mapleton Avenue near Linwood Elementary, saying repeated use by parents has caused property damage, crowded the 16‑foot road and created unsafe walking conditions for elementary students.
Bianculli described multiple incidents over recent years — broken fences, stolen bricks and damaged mailboxes — and said the Mapleton opening invites parents to use a narrow dead‑end street that was not engineered for heavy morning traffic. She proposed gating the Mapleton opening while keeping it available for occasional events such as parent‑teacher night or field day and even offered to contribute $100 toward the cost.
Board members said the incident was new to the board as a whole and that administration would contact the building principal, inspect property lines and determine whether the opening creates a health or safety risk requiring action. The board did not commit to a specific remedy at the meeting and said it would report back after the site review.
