Sachem board swears in student member, approves routine personnel and consent items

The Sachem Central School District Board of Education swore in student board member Michael Janeski at its Aug. 14 meeting. Janeski recited the oath, saying, “I am Michael Janeski. I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of New York, and I will faithfully discharge the duties of student board member according to the best of my ability.”
Following the oath, the board approved routine business, including the July 24 minutes, business and personnel consent agendas, contracts, donations and community/special education consent items. Several motions were made and carried by voice vote; specific seconders named in the record include Stephanie and Maddie Baumann for the business consent agenda and Sabrina and Stephanie on a personnel motion.
During review of personnel items, a board member raised concerns about the increasing number of out-of-district (OOD) hires for coaching, music and theater positions. The member warned that continued reliance on OOD candidates could create shortages and urged that applicants’ willingness to participate in extracurriculars be factored into hiring decisions. District staff responded that the professional application includes an area for applicants to indicate interest in curricular clubs or sports and that athletic directors and staff coordinate onboarding and certification requirements such as AED/CPR training.
The board also recognized personnel changes: new hires and rehires were invited to introduce themselves (Matthew Breese identified himself as a physical education teacher at High Wyndham Elementary), and the board acknowledged the retirement of a clerical employee, Linda Elena, at Somerset Middle School.
The board set expectations for the student board member’s reports and said those updates will appear regularly on the Genesis student board member report and in future meetings. The meeting closed this portion of business and moved on to other agenda items.
