The Sachem Central School District Board approved budget transfers greater than $2,000 as part of routine mid-year budget adjustments. Finance staff explained the district's annual practice of issuing a Tax Anticipation Note (TAN) to finance operations from July through December until state aid and property tax revenue arrive.
District finance staff said this year the district issued about $7 million more in TANs than in prior years to reduce the need for interfund borrowing. They told the board that doing earlier borrowing allowed the district to take advantage of lower interest rates available at the time; while the TAN increases interest expense, the district also offset costs by earning higher interest revenue on invested proceeds. Staff noted that transfers recorded at this point in the fiscal year reflect interest expense adjustments and health-service billing allocations across districts.
During the meeting a board member asked for clarity on dollar figures and the timing of future budget presentations; staff confirmed the first formal budget presentation is scheduled for Jan. 20, with earlier departmental work ongoing and a possible December snapshot. The public transcript records staff statements of approximate amounts but does not include line-item budget documents or a full roll-call vote for the transfers beyond the meeting's voice approvals.
