Mississippi State Extension Service representatives asked the Hancock County Board for permission to locate a 12‑by‑8‑foot greenhouse on county property and to accept a $500 Master Gardener grant to fund it. The board approved permits and waived related fees by unanimous vote.
Katie Mayfield, speaking for the Extension team, outlined recent SNAP‑Ed activities in Hancock County and reported 325 youths participated in programs with an approximately 76% graduation or completion rate from the classes. Mayfield described workshops that included cooking and food‑safety skills, summer feeding‑site tastings and upcoming library programs for children and families.
"We graduated 14 kids out of 15 that signed up" in a recent local class, Mayfield said, describing hands‑on sessions intended to promote healthy, budget‑friendly meals and family cooking skills.
The greenhouse motion was moved, seconded and approved (5–0); the board also authorized staff to execute pro forma agreements with the state university to begin the application process related to training and program delivery.
