The Wythe County School Board publicly recognized four schools selected for the Virginia Board of Education's Exemplar School recognition, noting high performance across reading, mathematics and science. District leaders named Fort Chiswell High School, Max Meadows Elementary and other recipients and praised school staff and community volunteers for student engagement and attendance initiatives.
Separately, district staff provided a construction update for the new Scott Memorial Middle School building. Staff said students first used the new facility on Nov. 6 and that final-site grading, underground utilities and site lighting are complete. Remaining items on the punch list include permanent exterior handrails (affected by a supplier backlog), interior door hardware, stair treads and a small number of lighting fixtures on back order. Staff cited supply-chain delays following regional storm impacts and said final corrections should be complete before a ribbon-cutting now scheduled for Jan. 16, 2025.
Board members thanked host Stone faculty and staff for hosting the meeting and congratulated school leaders for the recognition and construction milestones. Staff said they will provide a further construction update at the next meeting and will set a time for the Jan. 16 ribbon-cutting at the December meeting.
Next steps: staff will provide a December update on punch-list completion and finalize ribbon-cutting logistics for January.
