Lamarque honors local heroes, unveils Civic Academy plan and approves library mural

At the Dec. 9 meeting the Lamarque City Council presented proclamations and recognized community members, approved a public art project at the library and heard a youth-focused Civic Academy curriculum prepared by a University of Houston intern.
The council proclaimed recognition for sixth-grade student David Jimenez, who alerted neighbors and called 911 when a neighbor's trash bin caught fire; the fire chief and family joined the presentation. The council also honored Diane Merchant for 42 years of local educational service and recognized her founding role with Mainland Preparatory Academy.
Intern Julian introduced a Civic Academy curriculum intended as a 6-to-9-week series to explain city government functions to residents, with 60-second department videos, presentations and a certification for graduates to encourage ongoing civic engagement. "Civic Academy is around a 6 to 9 week course...the goal is to help citizens of Lamarque have a better understanding of their local government," Julian said.
Council also approved a proposed mural at the Lamarque Public Library. Staff and the Keep Lamarque Beautiful Commission presented a final mock-up and addressed technical questions about applying paint to the building's textured exterior; the artist and site-prep plan were discussed and the motion to authorize the mural carried on a voice vote.
