Doreen Murray Thomas, a member of the Essex County Board of County Commissioners, opened a ceremony recognizing International Day of the Girl and presented awards to students and community mentors from county schools and programs. The event featured brief remarks from Doctor Peterson, superintendent of Essex County Schools, and student speakers including Raven Saint Paul and Miracle Baker.
"I know the power of girls," Doctor Peterson said, reflecting on the district's commitment to nurturing young women's leadership. Raven Saint Paul, a fourth-grader at Pingree, told the audience she is "thrilled" to celebrate the day and urged attendees to "take a stand for girls like me who are unable to cast their vote this year."
Honorees named and celebrated included Derica Johnson (Speedway Avenue School), Takara Phillips (Essex County North Tech), Nevaeh Lane (North Star Academy), Oluwademalade Siya Addua (Irvington High School) and the Central High School girls basketball team. The Newark School of Fashion and Design was also recognized for a student fashion program; principal Sakina Pitts and other educators were thanked for mentorship and program support.
Organizers stressed the role of families, schools and local leaders in supporting girls' rights and opportunities. Commissioner Murray Thomas said the awards and commendations are intended to become an annual county observance and noted that a formal resolution recognizing the month will follow at a future meeting.
The ceremony concluded with a group photo and presentation of formal commendations from the Board of County Commissioners and the city of Newark, after which the board proceeded to its regular agenda.
