Bridgeton council adopts six-month moratorium on new tavern liquor licenses

The Bridgeton City Council voted to adopt Resolution R24-04, establishing a six-month moratorium on issuing new "by the drink" liquor licenses for tavern or saloon establishments within city limits.

Council member Luther introduced the resolution and moved for its passage. After brief procedural discussion and a roll-call process, the presiding official announced that the resolution passed. The resolution was presented as "a resolution establishing a 6 month moratorium on the issuance of liquor licenses by the drink for new tavern or saloon establishments within the municipal limits of the city of Bridgeton, Missouri." Supporters on the council described the moratorium as a temporary measure to give staff time to review regulatory and neighborhood impacts before permitting new taverns. Opponents recorded during the roll call registered formal nays prior to the final tally, and the motion was decided by the council's recorded vote.

Council members who spoke said the pause is intended to allow a fuller review of zoning, public-safety and neighborhood effects before any new licenses are granted.
