Mexico council OKs annual agreements for senior meals, help center, history and chamber

The Mexico City Council on a unanimous roll call approved four routine FY2025 agreements that authorize the city manager to sign contracts with local service organizations.

Council approved a resolution authorizing a $14,000 contribution to the Mexico Senior Nutrition Center to help offset operational costs for congregate meals, curbside/carryout service and home-delivery for roughly 100 homebound recipients. Ion Bickel, the programadministrator who addressed council, said the center serves 60to 80 congregate meals on typical days and delivers frozen meals to about 100 homebound households every other week. "We've never had to turn a senior down because they didn't have money," Bickel said.

The council also approved a $7,500 contribution to the Help Center, which staff said serves about 700 households a month and provides a range of services including food distributions, clothing, benevolence assistance and help obtaining IDs and birth certificates. Kim Archer, the Help Center's executive director, attended the meeting and the council passed the resolution by roll call vote.

The city authorized $7,400 in support for the Audrain County Historical Society. Jennifer Pryor, the museum's executive director, described recent veterans-focused exhibits and community programs including a December Christmas dinner and plans to expand children's programming and a Miss Missouri exhibit scheduled for 2025.

Finally, council approved a $13,000 agreement with the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce to underwrite community marketing activities; staff said the city has made a similar contribution for more than 20 years.

Each of the four measures was presented by staff as an annual, budgeted renewal and passed on a roll call vote. No amendments were offered at the meeting. The agreements will be handled through the city manager's office under the FY2025 budget authorization.
