Residents press council on downtown garbage, tree care; filmmakers ask to present documentary plans

Several residents used the June 26 public-comment period to press the council on recurring downtown garbage and to request additional maintenance resources. Kathy Stewart (Pine Street) thanked staff for recent improvements but said some addresses and downtown cans remain repeat trouble spots and asked whether the borough has considered hiring a retiree or part-time maintenance person to sweep and pick up litter near commercial areas. Borough staff and the administrator said the municipality is negotiating with the union about staffing and will discuss options in a workshop; staff requested two weeks to report back and noted the next full meeting is in July.
Randy Hinton of the Shade Tree Commission reminded residents that newly planted trees need regular watering, asking those with new trees to provide "at least 5 gallons or 10 gallons of water per week," especially through the tree strip. Council members suggested residents contact DPW or a named staff member if a tree appears neglected so DPW can temporarily water vulnerable plantings.
A representative of Silk City Films (a local production company) asked for permission to film and requested a formal presentation showing traffic and view metrics, examples from other towns and brief drone footage. Council members invited the filmmaker to prepare a one-minute summary now and to present a fuller package at the July 17 meeting; the filmmaker agreed to send materials to the borough administrator in advance.
Staff said they will follow up on garbage complaints, coordinate with DPW and report back on whether a part-time maintenance hire is feasible in current contract negotiations.
