Pompton Lakes to use $47,000 NJEDA grant for environmental investigation and demolition of former auto‑body site

Pompton Lakes council on Oct. 9 memorialized a grant agreement with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority for $47,000 to remediate a former A‑1 Auto Body site and pay for environmental investigation and building removal.
Administrator Michael told the council the grant from the NJEDA Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund will pay for the site investigation work already completed, the phase‑2 investigation and demolition. “We got a grant of $47,000 which was taken into our budget at the last council meeting,” he said.
Council members discussed next steps for the parcel once remediation is complete. Michael said the borough would remove an identified underground storage tank and, once cleared, could turn the lot over to the open‑space committee to evaluate making a “small park or sitting area.” He added the borough will pursue additional Passaic County grant funding and coordinate planning with the open‑space committee.
Council members asked whether open‑space funds could be used for improvements on property not currently on the open‑space inventory; administrators and council members said open‑space money can be used for general open‑space purposes and the borough will consult its planner about formally adding the lot to the open‑space inventory if desired.
