Smithville aldermen approve stop-sign ordinance, site plan, street-name changes and routine resolutions

The Smithville Board of Aldermen approved a series of routine and substantive items during the meeting, including a stop-sign ordinance, a site plan, multiple street-name changes, licensing and appointments.

Traffic controls: Alderman Atkins moved and the board approved Bill 3034-24, an ordinance amending Schedule 7 (stop signs) of the municipal code. The clerk called roll; Aldermen Hartman, Kabilski, Atkins, Wilson, Shipley and Russell each voted "Aye" and the ordinance passed 6-0.

Development and licensing: The board approved Resolution 13-82, a site plan for 14790 North Fairview, after a brief review indicating the plan had cleared planning and zoning.

Street names: The board voted to approve Resolutions 13-83 through 13-87 to change various street names to resolve duplicate or conflicting names (for example, inconsistencies between "Commercial Avenue/Street/Drive" and Terrace vs. Street designations). Planning staff (Jack) explained the changes are intended to align addresses with the MSAG and 911 database used by the Mid America Regional Council and to reduce dispatch/addressing confusion; letters to affected property owners and utilities will be sent and signs will be updated over time.

Other routine actions: The board approved Resolution 13-88 (liquor license) and Resolution 13-89 (appointment of special counsel) by voice vote. The mayor also nominated Terry Hall to fill a planning commission vacancy with a term ending in 2027; the clerk took roll and the appointment was approved by a 6-0 vote.

What happens next: For the street-name changes, staff will mail notices to affected property owners and notify dispatch and utilities; the changes will take effect on the timeline described by staff (letters, a 30- to 60-day notice period and gradual sign changes). For ordinances and resolutions, staff will carry out necessary administrative steps.
