Smithville recreation coordinator reports strong summer attendance and rising youth-sports registrations

Alex, the city's recreation coordinator, presented a recap of summer programming and registration trends. She said breakfast-in-the-park events averaged about 20–25 people each Monday in July, totaling roughly 100 attendees for the month; painting and science classes ran full at 20 participants per class and sunset yoga averaged about 15 attendees weekly. "We had about a 100 people for the whole month show up," Alex said of the July breakfasts.
Alex said open-play pickleball drew 24 players and the department added an extra monthly session; the Kansas City Symphony in the Park was rescheduled for September with free admission, and several fall and winter activities (Haunted Campground, outdoor movie, puzzle palooza, candy cane quest and holiday-lighting contest) were finalized and posted on the city website.
Board members noted significant late registrations for fall soccer — staff relayed growth from around 195 to 230 earlier and to approximately 235 as of the meeting — and ongoing openings for fall tee ball and soccer clinics. Staff agreed to provide more detailed registration and shelter-rental revenue figures when requested.
Next steps: finalized fall/winter program cards are on the city website and staff will supply follow-up data on registrations and shelter availability when available.
