Smithville aldermen approve package of ordinances and development actions, record public safety concern on Highway 169

At its meeting the Smithville Board of Aldermen approved a package of ordinances and resolutions affecting fees, licensing, development and infrastructure funding. Motions from Alderman Atkins carried for bills and resolutions including: bill 3041-24 (zoning/subdivision fee amendments), bill 3042-24 (business license fees), resolution 14-10 (policy manual amendment), resolution 14-11 (schedule of fees), resolution 14-12 (employee compensation plan), resolution 14-13 (temporary liquor license with one abstention), resolution 14-14 (agreement with USACE for funding of the 140 Fourth Street pump station), and approvals for Fairview Crossing site plan and plat (resolutions 14-15 and 14-16) as well as a CID board successor assignment (resolution 14-17).

Miss Wagner, the city administrator, read ordinance language aloud for several items, including the zoning and business license amendments. Votes on multiple items were unanimous (5-0) where recorded; resolution 14-13 recorded an abstention from Alderman Shipley. The board's planning and zoning chair noted that the 169 South Overlay District will be pushed to the public for input in the future.

During public comment, Matt Tyson of the Cedar Lakes HOA raised safety concerns about Highway 169, describing narrow 12-foot travel lanes, lack of a shoulder, curb placement and potential winter snow/ice complications; he asked the board to continue communicating with MoDOT on the issue. The board acknowledged the concern and said staff and members have communicated with MoDOT in the past.

Other administrative items included an update on water-treatment residual hauling by Richards Construction and an expression of thanks to GT Towing (the Grisham family) for their disaster response assistance to a southeastern hurricane event.

The board then voted 5-0 to adjourn to executive session under section 610.0213 of the Missouri statutes.
