The Sunnyside Unified School District governing board voted unanimously to accept the district’s 2023–24 annual comprehensive financial report and related audit documents and approved routine consent items before appointing an assistant principal.
Christopher Heinfeld of Heinfeld, Meach & Company presented the audit and said the firm was issuing "unmodified opinions," a clean audit, and that auditors did not identify any significant deficiencies or material weaknesses in the district’s financial reporting or internal controls. Heinfeld also reported that prior-year findings had been corrected and described the audit as performed in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards and government auditing standards.
Board discussion included a question from Trustee Rodriguez about a list of noncompliance items the trustee said he counted; Heinfeld said auditors meet with district staff during fieldwork to flag issues in real time and work with management on corrective actions. Finance and management staff confirmed they develop corrective action plans and share findings with site leaders.
Procedural business moved quickly: the board approved the agenda and the consent agenda by roll call votes, each member recorded as voting "Aye." Later in the meeting the board voted to enter executive session under ARS 38-431.03(A)(1) to discuss personnel matters. After returning, the board approved by roll call the appointment of Tiffany Mendez Munoz as assistant principal at Desert View High School for the 2025–26 school year and placed her on Grade B Level 3.
The actions recorded during the meeting were: approval of the agenda, approval of the consent agenda, acceptance of the 2023–24 audit reports, authorization to enter executive session under ARS 38-431.03(A)(1), and the appointment of an assistant principal. All formal motions recorded in the transcript passed by unanimous recorded roll call with each listed trustee voting "Aye."
