Board highlights student awards, volunteer of the month and Petsworth’s house system

The Gloucester County School Board opened its Nov. 12 meeting with multiple recognitions for students and community volunteers, and a presentation from Petsworth Elementary about its house system.
Superintendent Vladeau and board members honored Gloucester High seniors Mariah Linkhouse and Cody Keck as November seniors of the month and presented a "Making a Difference" special award to Hannah Broadwell, who used health‑care training from a class to recognize and respond when an adult showed stroke symptoms. The board read students’ accomplishments aloud and invited families to the front for recognition.
Keith Nuttall was named Volunteer of the Month for his years of service at Petsworth Elementary. Following the awards, Melissa Migas and student house leaders described Petsworth’s five-house model: each student and staff member is assigned to a house, house leaders run meetings and coordinate service projects (examples: collecting art supplies for a children’s hospital, donating shoes to a reuse program, working with a nursing home and supporting military families). Students said the houses earn beads for positive behavior and compete in schoolwide events, and they outlined involvement in an annual turkey trot and food drive to benefit the Salem Community Church pantry.
Board members praised the program and recessed briefly to meet students and take photos. The recognitions set the tone for a meeting that also addressed policy scheduling, capital planning and budget items.
