The Danville School Board on Jan. 23 approved routine agenda items and heard updates from student representatives and a capital projects committee.
Board members moved and approved the amended agenda after a request to remove board comments ahead of a planned closed session. The minutes and a slate of consent recognitions — including observances for Black History Month and National School Counseling Week — were approved by roll call votes.
Student representatives Darien Saunders, Sophia Lee and Frank Lee reported on a recent student workshop that covered parliamentary procedure, civic engagement and the "five belongings" students need in school: safety, feeling valued, opportunities, strong instruction and culture. Saunders summarized a High School Voter Empowerment Act briefing and emphasized civic education activities that the students described as important to preparing peers for participation in democracy.
Mr. Payne, reporting for the school opening committee, said George Washington High School Phase 3 opened Jan. 8 and that Arnett Hills and George Washington projects are on schedule while Langston is 11 days behind schedule; furniture orders and signage approvals are complete and the next committee meeting is Feb. 10 at 3 p.m.
Personnel recommendations were presented by Miss Wimberley and approved after a motion by Mr. Payne, seconded by Dr. Williams. Miss Gillis presented the revenue and expenditure statement for Dec. 2024 and associated reappropriations and funds; the board voted to accept the finance report. The clerk called the roll for recorded actions.
The meeting concluded with a motion to recess for a seven‑minute closed session recess.
