Danville schools honor history, math, science winners and winter athletes

The board celebrated student achievements across history day, math and science competitions and winter sports. District representatives and coaches named individual and school winners and highlighted district goals to close achievement gaps.
A district representative told the board that competitions across January–March produced multiple winners and that the district’s mission is "to raise our student achievement, to close our achievement gaps, and to empower students to take ownership over their learning." The meeting listed winners from DPS History Day and National History Day, noted Gibson Elementary and Forest Hills among school winners, and announced overall winners at each grade band.
The board also recognized the third annual Danville Public Schools math competition (held Feb. 7 at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research) with 150 student participants. Individual winners were named across elementary, middle and high school bands and the district referenced the Octavius Jones Math Cup for overall elementary winners.
In athletics, coaches and staff highlighted individual and team achievements: wrestler Donovan Reeves (27–4 record, district champion, region runner-up, two-time state qualifier), JV boys basketball Piedmont District champions, and Galileo Magnet School’s indoor track successes, among other honors. Coaches introduced student-athletes and noted all-region and all-state recognitions.
The recognitions were ceremonial; the board did not take policy action during the presentations.
