The Culpeper County School Board opened its December meeting with recognitions and student input.
School staff recognized Culpeper County High School students who earned AP Scholar distinctions and noted two students received National Merit commendations. The board also presented the Virginia Department of Education Exemplar Performance Award to CCHS for three years of improvement in graduation and dropout metrics.
Campbell Lee, a senior at Eastern View High School and a member of the superintendent's student advisory group, described SAG priorities: adding classes (citing study hall success and a proposed real-estate course that students requested), expanding extracurriculars (a student-led choral club and men's volleyball) and continuing universal free breakfasts and lunches. On the district's new no-cell-phone policy with assigned pouches, Lee said the first three days after implementation produced "the most interactive I've had throughout all of high school." Board members praised student input and thanked staff and volunteers for events such as STEAM night and a glow art show at Farmington Elementary.
The recognitions and student report took place early in the meeting; board members later moved through consent and action items and scheduled further budget and calendar approvals for January.
