Board approves purchase of armored 'BearCat' for sheriff’s office

The Culpeper County Board of Supervisors voted to award a contract to Mallory Safety and Supply LLC for a Lenco-style BearCat tactical armored vehicle for use by the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff described prior experience with an MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle, which he said was large, heavy and limited by bridge weight restrictions. He said the proposed BearCat is closer to the size of a suburban and would be more practical for insertion and on-scene operations. He told the board the vehicle takes about 14 months to build and that funding would come from savings realized in jail outsource costs earlier in the fiscal year.
"This is a way to insert people and have it on scene," the sheriff said, adding the county had saved about $300,000 in outsourcing costs and that funds could be encumbered for the build time.
Board members moved and seconded the contract award and approved it by voice vote. The sheriff and staff said procurement and delivery timelines will determine when the county is charged and when the vehicle is accepted into service.
