Culpeper schools roll out division literacy plan under Virginia Literacy Act

Culpeper County Public Schools presented its division literacy plan in compliance with the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA). Susan Campbell told the board the division's draft was due July 1 and the state approved the plan on Aug. 1. The plan is fully implemented in elementary schools and the division plans to expand required components into middle schools next year.
Campbell said the division has purchased and trained staff on high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and that teacher training under the VLA is scheduled to begin as the state enrolls teachers in Canvas-based courses. She said screening, diagnostic and progress-monitoring assessments and trained staff are in place to support classroom identification and intervention.
A key near-term requirement is to select evidence-based intervention programs for students identified as high risk; the division must finalize that piece and resubmit parts of the plan by Dec. 6, Campbell said. The division will also post the names of reading specialists and interventionists for public contact and is planning a hands-on, divisionwide literacy night for kindergarten families.
Board members praised the work and asked clarifying questions about the breadth of the event. Administration said the literacy supports and parents' events are intended for all families but will emphasize kindergarten through grade two needs initially.
