Commissioners highlight parks upgrades, Juneteenth events, veterans recognition and student awards

Several commissioners used the June 20 meeting to brief the board on community events and county programs.
Commissioner Nash described a recent visit to the Battleship New Jersey in dry dock and noted the vessel was returning to its home port that afternoon; he also highlighted three park upgrades included on the agenda (Cooper River Park, Berlin Park and the county trail) and praised the parks department and summer concert series.
Commissioner Keith thanked the sheriff's honor guard for their presence at veteran-focused programs, said a June 14 veterans' medal ceremony honored 16 recipients, and noted the county had collected and respectfully retired roughly 30,000 flags placed in veterans' graves.
Commissioner Dyer thanked county workforce teams for supporting concerts and Juneteenth events countywide. Commissioner Bedridge, liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services, described fan and air-conditioner donations for eligible seniors and said the Board of Social Services is managing increased workload during program unwinding.
Deputy Director McDonald reported that Creative Arts High School had been accidentally omitted from a prior "best of class" awards program and that commissioners visited to present awards to eight students. The chair said members of the color guard will receive a framed copy of the resolution.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn.
