Tiverton committee approves reallocating lock-bid savings to chimney, doors and auditorium sound upgrades

The Tiverton School Committee voted to use most of the savings from lower-than-expected interior-locks bid results to fund three district facilities projects.
Superintendent Doctor Cinquioni told the committee that the town council had initially allocated $525,000 for interior locks but the bid returned at $195,000, producing approximately $330,000 in savings. He asked the committee to consider using $248,152 of the delta to address three immediate needs: removal of a deteriorating chimney at the high school ($65,000), replacement of 12 exterior doors across district buildings ($136,152), and installation of a new auditorium sound system at Tiverton High School ($47,000). Cinquioni said the remaining $81,848 would be returned to the town if approved.
After discussion about timing and the chair’s request to also explore upgrading the district accounting system, a motion was amended to approve the three projects while deferring returning the $81,848 to the town council. The committee approved the amended motion by voice vote.
Cinquioni described the chimney condition as degraded and urged addressing it before it worsens; he also said the auditorium lacks an adequate sound system that impedes performances and community use. The committee asked staff to present the same information to town council and to continue investigating possible uses of remaining funds and future capital requests.
The vote authorized staff to proceed to seek town-council approval for the reallocation and to begin procurement for the approved projects.
