Tiverton High School scores exceed state mean on the SAT overall but math proficiency lags, officials say

Tiverton High School officials presented recent assessment results and department action plans to the school committee, highlighting areas of strength and concern.
Mrs. Craven told the committee that the school’s mean total SAT score was 967 compared with a Rhode Island mean of 918 and a global mean of 952. She also noted a small dip in the total mean score since 2020 and said the shift to digital administration likely affected year‑to‑year comparisons. “We do not want to teach to the test. Teach to the standards and the standards are on the test,” she said when describing the district’s approach to intervention.
Department breakdowns showed strengths in ELA proficiency (55.6%) relative to neighboring districts, while math proficiency at Tiverton was 28.8%. The Next Generation Science Assessment proficiency was 41.7%. Craven outlined targeted action plans—vocabulary and SAT strategies for ELA; algebra skill-building, interim assessments and Khan Academy practice for math; and six‑week progress monitoring across departments.
Advanced Placement participation rose to 264 students taking at least one AP class; 38% of students who took an AP exam scored a 3 or better. The committee asked for trend data and additional breakdowns by cohort and participation to better understand proficiency fluctuations. Administrators said they will return with further analysis and monitor progress at six‑week intervals.
