The Tiverton School Committee voted to refer a proposed policy on oversight and reporting for capital spending funded through town casino allocations after administrators described reimbursement timing and recent project accounting.
Superintendent Dr. Sanchione reviewed two memos about capital projects, noting the district had a $1.3 million locker‑room/fitness project and expected reimbursements of roughly $1.7 million over the next couple of years. He said reimbursements lag, so the district may need to rely on town advances until the funds arrive.
The chair said the committee had approved requests but lacked visibility into how invoices and reimbursements were being handled and proposed a referral to the policy subcommittee so the committee could adopt a reporting requirement and oversight expectations. “I do think that the school committee should be looking closely at the spending that is related to everything involving the schools,” the chair said.
A motion to refer development of a reporting/oversight policy to the policy subcommittee was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote. The committee asked the new finance director to help craft reporting templates to keep the committee informed of capital project progress and reimbursements.
