Mitchell County recreation director outlines recovery, donations and a new community center

Brock Duskin, representing Mitchell County recreation, updated the board on post-storm recovery for youth sports and on new facility plans.
Duskin said registration for baseball, softball and tee ball had topped about 300 youth and that limited field availability is constraining play after the storm damaged facilities and raised water levels. He described ongoing site visits and regulatory steps that must be cleared before repairs and some improvements can proceed.
He reported two major gifts to help restore playability: a private donor (identified in the presentation as Lisa Hawkins) gave $88,000 to help repair one field, and the Carolina Hurricanes organization provided $150,000 earmarked for Lake Tipton’s field. Duskin said the Hurricanes had offered to recognize the project at a game and would send representatives to see the completed work.
Duskin also described a new recreation center whose framing is up and that could open in August or September, pending final construction and grant arrangements. He said the program is exploring travel tournaments to draw visitors and provide recurring revenue and noted a $3,000 donation from Tar Heel League president Steven Pulis for equipment.
No formal county funding decision was requested during the update; the presentation focused on grants, donations, and operational planning for the coming season.
