Princeton AI Hub pitched as connective tissue for New Jersey's AI ecosystem

Jeffrey Oakman, senior strategic AI Hub project manager at Princeton University, told the Senate Legislative Oversight Committee that the New Jersey AI Hub is intended as a disruptive convening force for research, entrepreneurship and workforce pathways.

"As Princeton's senior strategic AI Hub project manager, I've been working closely with Princeton's leadership and coordinating across various parts of the university to help shape the vision for the AI hub," Oakman said, describing the hub as a partnership between Princeton and the state that will "serve as a catalyst for innovation in AI and as the connective tissue for the AI ecosystem in New Jersey."

Oakman said the hub is still early in development and currently lacks a physical space, but emphasized that its regional impact will depend on activity outside its walls: partnerships with higher education, industry mentoring, and training pathways from high school through advanced degrees. He highlighted planned workshops to co-develop curricula across two‑ and four‑year institutions and said the hub will prioritize talent development and applied research collaboration.

Committee members raised concerns about institutional territoriality and the need for shared services; Oakman said the hub aims to facilitate collaborative research and reduce redundant investments across campuses.

The hub's organizers and state officials said they will convene further planning sessions and workshops in the coming weeks to refine governance, physical footprint and equity measures.
