Committee releases bill to re-establish farm pesticide disposal program
Summary
S-1576 would reintroduce a statewide pesticide collection and disposal program for agricultural users; the New Jersey Farm Bureau and county agriculture boards urged passage, saying a prior program existed in the 1990s–2000s and counties requested its return.
The Senate Energy and Environment Committee voted Feb. 10 to release S-1576, legislation that would establish a farm pesticide collection and disposal program similar to one that existed previously.
Ashley Kerr of the New Jersey Farm Bureau said county boards repeatedly raised the need to resume a recycling or collection program that faded over the last decade, noting the program previously operated in the 1990s and early 2000s. Jeff Berg of the Mercer County Board of Agriculture testified the county board strongly supports the bill.
Committee members asked several technical questions about the program’s past operations and timeline; with no major opposition presented at the hearing, the committee voted to release the measure.
