Senate committee releases bill adding fusion to Class 1 renewable definition

The Senate Energy and Environment Committee voted Feb. 10 to release S-364, a measure that would add “fusion” to the definition of Class 1 renewable energy for purposes of the state’s energy competition statute. Committee members approved technical amendments and recorded written comments from the rate counsel.
Committee members heard a mix of stakeholder slips in support — including labor, business and sustainability organizations — and one written opposition from Clean Water Action. Brian Littman of the rate counsel provided written amendment language and the chair noted those technical fixes were incorporated.
There was no extended testimony; the sponsor and the committee characterized the changes as technical. The committee moved and released the bill with a roll-call that recorded affirmative votes from senators present and no opposition noted on the record.
The bill will go to further committee consideration on its next legislative step. No formal floor date was set at the hearing.
