New Jersey Assembly honors community groups, debates housing and utility oversight, and passes a broad slate of bills

The New Jersey General Assembly convened for a floor session that began with ceremonial observances and proceeded to a full calendar of legislation, including extended debate on housing and utility oversight before the chamber approved a broad slate of bills and joint resolutions.

Assembly leaders opened the session with an invocation and AAPI Heritage Month recognitions. The ceremonial portion included a resolution honoring the Community Food Bank of New Jersey on its 50th anniversary and multiple individual recognitions for educators, coaches, medical professionals and community volunteers.

The day's legislative work was front-loaded with bills on third reading and a lengthy consent agenda. Multiple bills on water safety and related education measures were approved unanimously. Assemblywoman Colassos Gill noted the public-safety framing of those items, saying, "Water safety is not only about recreation. It's about saving lives." The chamber recorded 78 affirmative votes on Assembly Bill 47 62 and Assembly Bill 47 63, designating May as Water Safety Month and requiring an educational fact sheet for schools, respectively.
