House approves amended executive compensation package, raising governor and other officer pay

The Utah House on Feb. 26 approved an amended executive compensation package contained in Senate Bill 225, moving pay levels for statewide officers and adopting a substitute amendment before passing the bill 46-15.
Representative Jensen, who carried the personnel amendment, told members the measure sets pay for statewide officers and detailed proposed adjustments. "It changes the governor's salary from 75,000 to 85,050," Jensen said, and he outlined increases for the lieutenant governor and other officers intended to make key offices competitive. Jensen said the changes would make the attorney general—s pay more in line with comparable positions and follow recommendations of the Executive Compensation Commission.
Representative Bishop offered a substitute motion that applied a 3% across-the-board rate to the state officers' pay package. That substitute amendment was put to a voice vote and adopted, after which the House voted on the bill as amended.
Voting was opened and closed on the amended bill; the clerk announced the tally as 46 affirmative votes and 15 negative votes. The House passed the amended Senate Bill 225 and will refer the measure back to the Senate for further consideration.
The action completes the House's work on the executive pay adjustments for this session. The measure's language, sponsors, and procedural history were read publicly and entered into the House journal.
