House unanimously approves resolution honoring Dr. Henry J. Heimlich

The Utah House adopted House Concurrent Resolution 10 on Jan. 20, 1992, honoring Dr. Henry J. Heimlich, M.D., for his contributions to lifesaving techniques and medical devices. The resolution — introduced under suspension of the rules after a Rules Committee recommendation — recited Heimlich’s education, inventions (including the Heimlich maneuver, Heimlich valve, and microtrache), awards, and stated that the Heimlich maneuver had saved ‘‘over 35,000 choking victims in the United States alone.’’
Representative Behn, Representative Julander (a nurse), Representative Price and other cosponsors and colleagues offered floor remarks thanking Dr. Heimlich and noting training programs in Utah. Representative Julander said, “As a nurse, I know firsthand the value of the Heimlich maneuver and am very grateful to have been taught and have been able to use this on 1 occasion.”
Voting closed with 66 affirmative votes and 0 negative votes; HCR 10 passed the House and was forwarded to the Senate for its consideration. The resolution directs that a copy be presented to Dr. Heimlich.
