House suspends rules and moves three public-safety bills to top of third-reading calendar
Summary
The House voted to suspend the rules and place House Bills 95, 109 and 85 (public-safety measures including drive-by shootings and weapon-free school zones) at the top of the third-reading calendar for prompt consideration the next day.
At the end of the Jan. 15 session Representative Bishop moved to suspend the rules and lift three bills related to public safety — House Bill 95 (drive-by shootings), House Bill 109 (weapon-free school zones), and House Bill 85 — from the rules committee and place them at the top of the third-reading calendar.
The House first voted to suspend the rules and then approved the motion to move the three bills so they will be the first matters taken up the next day. Representative Bishop said the bills were part of an interim package addressing gangs and that the House planned to begin focused debate on them early the following morning to allow adequate floor time.
The motion passed following a division call and the chair announced the three bills had been placed at the top of the third-reading calendar.
