House approves bill letting state committee produce population estimates for small communities

The House on March 2 approved Senate Bill 165, a measure that authorizes the Utah Population Estimate Committee to supply population figures for communities of 5,000 or fewer residents after the federal Census Bureau indicated it would no longer provide that data.
Representative Hickman explained that three state statutes use population as a base for distributing funds — including certain road funds and local sales-tax distributions — and that the committee (created by Gov. Matheson) is positioned to supply the necessary figures if the Census Bureau declines to provide them. The Clerk recorded final passage with 67 affirmative and 0 negative votes.
Supporters said the change preserves formulas for distributing state resources to cities and counties that rely on up-to-date population estimates; the floor record does not include objections to the legislation.
