Students, principal and teachers tell House school uniforms improved order and parent engagement

Jane Larson told the chamber, “My name is Jane Larson and I'm the principal at Midland Park School,” and explained the school adopted a uniform policy and is the first public school in Utah to do so. Teachers and students described benefits they said followed adoption: a calmer classroom, increased parent attention to homework and grooming, and a reduction in visible socioeconomic differences among pupils. One teacher observed, “The uniforms are the only factor that has changed significantly at our school this year,” and described improvements in order, participation and parental involvement.
The presentation included named students and classroom groups, a demonstration of reading and math activities and teacher testimony that uniforms aided focus and a sense of belonging. After the program the House dissolved the Committee of the Whole and returned to legislative business.
